CCC: The Future is Now: Part IV

Remember: We're discussing the likelihood that these cards might see print in a Planar Set (A set with a fixed location, not a Masters set) and what planes they might be from! I may have missed Time Spiral Remastered but I definitely keep my promises! So let’s get into it! (Possibilities on a scale of 1-10)

Lucent Liminid

Lucent Liminid

Possibility of a Planar Reprint: 5

It’s a pretty basic card, but this came out pre-Theros so Enchantment Creature was a big deal. As of now, it’s just a 3/3 with flying for five that’s actually easier to kill. It’s safe to reprint, but the fact that it’s an Enchantment Creature means the set will have to call for that specifically.

Possible Plane(s): ???

It’s not Theros, we know that by the mention of the “Sun Goddess”. Unless Heliod transitions or gets deposed, I think we’ll just have to wait and see where our horse friend here truly hails from.

Mass of Ghouls

Mass of Ghouls

Possibility of a Planar Reprint: 6

It’s a 5 mana 5/3…I mean it’s not bad but why would they reprint it?

Possible Plane(s): Dominaria 10

Mass of Ghouls has been reprinted twice..for some reason, once in Tenth Edition and once in Time Spiral Remastered. In both printings the flavor text refers to an “Onean Scout.” Oneah is a country on Dominaria and the residents are referred to as Onean, thus placing Mass of Ghouls on Dominaria.

Whip-Spine Drake

Whip-Spine Drake

Possibility of a Planar Reprint: 6

Whip-Spine Drake is just a pretty decent card. It’s got solid stats and the Morph ability means it can synergize if it were put in a Morph limited format. Not a high pick, but I’d like to see this again in a new Morph set.

Possible Plane(s): ????

Originally I was gonna say either Dominaria or Ravnica since the flavor text refers to Skyknights which we’ve only ever seen on those two planes, but at the end of the day that’s barely anything. There’s no real evidence here so I don’t feel good trying to place it.

Deepcavern Imp

Deepcavern Imp

Possibility of a Planar Reprint: 4

If it weren’t for the Echo ability this would be higher, it’s a good card but Echo is never coming back.

Possible Plane(s): ???

With no flavor text on any printing, and since most planes have caves, there’s not much to go on here.

Death Rattle

Death Rattle

Possibility of a Planar Reprint: 4

It’s a good card, and I’d welcome seeing again, but magic seems to be moving away from Doomblade and cards that say stuff like “Nongreen.” Still, I think we could see Death Rattle again sometime.

Possible Plane(s): ???

Same as above, no flavor text and no art hints. Love the big snake skellies though.

Henchfiend of Ukor

Henchfiend of Ukor

Possibility of a Planar Reprint: 4

Echo…echo…echo…ech, oh no.

Possible Plane(s): ???

I was gonna say maybe Kamigawa because it’s an Ogre and being a “Henchfiend” to me could mean that it worshiped a demon, probably one named Ukor, but now that Kamigawa is a neon cityscape…I doubt this guy would still be kicking around.

Bitter Ordeal

Bitter Ordeal

Possibility of a Planar Reprint: 2

Gravestorm is something that I’d love to see return…but I don’t think that Wizards agrees with that statement. As a mechanic it tends to be pretty narrow and swingy, if we do see it return though I doubt Bitter Ordeal will be among those cards. It absolutely picks apart combo decks with the right deckbuilding and generally just isn’t healthy for a meta.

Possible Plane(s): ???

I saved a lot of these cards for last to give me time to research every last bit of them, but as you might be able to tell from these question marks…didn’t go well.

Nimbus Maze

Nimbus Maze

Possibility of a Planar Reprint: 7

Okay it’s not good reasoning, but my logic here basically boils down to “why not?” A cycle of Nimbus Mazes seems pretty good and it’s a dual cycle I think people would love to see.

Possible Plane(s): ???

It’s a maze in the clouds, that’s pretty generic fantasy so it really could be anywhere. I feel like I remember reading something about it being on a plane years ago, but I couldn’t find it again. If any of you know, feel free to sound off in the comments.

Tombstalker

Tombstalker

Possibility of a Planar Reprint: 5

If you’d asked me a few years ago I would’ve said no, but with modern Magic design Tombstalker doesn’t feel as good as it used to. It still has the potential to be a very early evasive threat due to delve + Self Mill + Fetches, but honestly, and this makes me sad, I think Tombstalker has just been outpaced.

Possible Plane(s): ???

Big demon boi. Art’s a bit too generic to really place though and with no flavor text, we’re left with no clues at all.

Logic Knot

Logic Knot

Possibility of a Planar Reprint: 4

I think in a world where standard legal nonspecific counterspells are usually at three mana, Logic Knot is just too good to see print. However…I’d like that to change so I’m hopeful as Logic Knot is not inherently unbeatable or broken, just very good.

Possible Plane(s): ???

I love the original but it’s so abstract. I mean ooh pretty void doesn’t really help me place it though. The newer printing has what I think are birch trees though…so it’s on maybe a birch tree having plane? Cool.

Spellweaver Volute

Spellweaver Volute

Possibility of a Planar Reprint: 4

Spellweaver Volute is the kind of card I hope to be making if I ever work at Wizards…that is also why this card will never be reprinted and I will never work at Wizards. It’s high concept and, although simple in execution, takes a lot of words to explain.

Possible Plane(s): ???

I googled Volute and it just means spiral, so maybe this actually Quandrix, they do love their spirals over at Quandrix

Arcanum Wings

Arcanum Wings

Possibility of a Planar Reprint: 2

Arcanum Wings is really good, but that’s mostly due to stuff like Eldrazi Conscription. On its own Wings is not busted, but it means that the Aura Swap mechanic would have to see print again, and although it’s certainly cool, that’s unlikely as all hell outside of Modern Horizons type things.

Possible Plane(s): ???

I mean the writing on the wings kind of looks like some weird Kanji-esque alphabet but that’s basically nothing in a multiverse with hundreds of languages on even more planes.

Fleshwrither

Fleshwrither

Possibility of a Planar Reprint: 1

Ew…also Transfigure has the potential to just be straight up broken. We don’t see tutor mechanics a lot because of this so I can’t say Fleshwrither has good odds here.

Possible Plane(s): ???

Grixis? Innistrad? Grotesque zombies are another generic fantasy staple and there are no planar defining features on this one (Like stitches to show it’s a Skaab). So I’ve got no solid guesses here.

Shapeshifter’s Marrow

Shapeshifters Marrow

Possibility of a Planar Reprint: 2

Cool card, definitely could see it in a Commander deck at some point, but it’s a bit of a weird one. I don’t like the odds here, but they do planar commander decks now so maybe.

Possible Plane(s): ???

Given the reference to shapeshifters I could see this on Kaldheim or Lorwyn as those are the big shapeshifter planes, but the art here shows a sleek dragon. Now I only point this out because the dragons of Kaldheim are usually very chunky. This isn’t a joke, I actually looked at them and they’re genuinely thicc lads. And while there are dragons on Lorwyn/Shadowmoor, we only ever see one and it is also a thiccie (Knollspine Dragon)

Whetwheel

Whetwheel

Possibility of a Planar Reprint: 4

Bad card and it’s a noncreature with morph. L + Ratio

Possible Plane(s): ???

I love the art here, like they just shoved this big menacing wheel in a shop and stuff went so wrong. No clear plane though.

Quagnoth

Quagnoth

Possibility of a Planar Reprint: 1

The combination of Shroud and Split-Second kills this guy's chances. Which totally sucks, it’s a rad card.

Possible Plane(s): Dominaria: 10

So originally I was like “No clue where this one is from.” but then I realized that “noth” is a common ending word on cards like Galvanoth so I looked up cards that ended with “noth” and found out that Quagnoth is actually a reference to Scragnoth from Tempest, the art clearly depicts a similar creature so I’m willing to say they’re both on Dominaria.

Thunderblade Charge

Thunderblade Charge

Possibility of a Planar Reprint: 4

Although I think this card is solid and would be fine to reprint, we saw basically a pseudo version printed in Ixalan with Repeating Barrage. That card didn’t really see any play so I don’t think Thunderblade Charge could really see print.

Possible Plane(s): ???

I’ve got no justification here but the art just screams Tarkir to me. I don’t think that’s right, but I did want to say it.

Yixlid Jailer

Yixlid Jailer

Possibility of a Planar Reprint: 6

Genuinely, Yixlid Jailer is such a good card. It’s ability will always be relevant in a lot of formats, it’s easy to kill so not really broken in any way, and worse comes to worse it’s a 2/1 for two, so solid stats. I want to see it so I’m biased, but I really do think we could see old Yixxy Jee again.

Possible Plane(s): ???

Okay…big brain, but Yixlid Jailer reminds me so much of the old Cabal from Dominaria. No solid ties, just a vibe. But I don’t grade on vibe so no solid guesses here.

And that’s it! That is every single timeshifted card from Time Spiral analyzed and overanalyzed. If you liked this series, lemme know I’m sure I could do more like it! If you didn’t, also let me know so I can never do another one like it again! We’ll be back to more standard design/game focused articles next month.
